Ask Dr. G: Questions and Answers about Holistic Dental Care

Why should I choose a holistic dentist?
Dentists with a holistic approach consider the source and the causes of the problems in your mouth, not just the symptoms. In general, holistic practitioners are mindful of the mind, body and spirit. Holistic dentistry emerged in the late 1970s as biological dentistry, which was a new form of Probiotic (life-supporting) dental medicine. It was developed in Germany and is now taught and practiced throughout the world. Holistic dentists invoke natural healing. They opt for non-invasive treatments and techniques whenever possible. In addition, holistic dentists provide patients with information and resources to help them take charge of their overall health.

How can I tell if I have periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease usually starts between the ages of 30 and 40. Symptoms include chronic bad breath, swollen and/or bleeding gums, loose and/or sensitive teeth and receding gums. While advanced periodontal disease is easy to detect by the natural eye, the early stages are only diagnosed by either dentists or hygienists. Dentists believe that gum disease needs to be treated with the same kind of intensity as heart disease, diabetes and other major ailments because it is detrimental to the health and well-being of patients. Holistic dentists treat gum disease with herbal remedies and thorough deep cleanings, plus lifestyle and nutritional changes to keep the gum disease under better control.

What are zirconia dental implants?
Zirconia dental implants are a metal-free alternative to titanium dental implants. The reason holistic dentists and others are offering zirconia is that the metal in titanium may affect some people in a negative way. Zirconia dental implants are also safe and strong, with studies showing that these metal-free implants don't retain a lot of plaque. Zirconia is classified as a high-performance special ceramic and does not conduct electricity. As a result, there are no negative effects on meridian energy pathways. Zirconia dental implants have tooth-like color, which makes them aesthetically and cosmetically pleasing to patients. To learn more, visit www.zirconiadentalimplantsblog.wordpress.com

What’s the deal with mercury-free, mercury-safe dentistry?
Many dentists and others are concerned about the toxicity of amalgam fillings in the mouth. As a result, a mercury-free movement has been established within the dental community. Mercury-free dentistry contains safe, tooth-colored porcelain composites that are as strong as mercury/silver amalgam fillings. In addition to mercury-free fillings, a mercury-free practice can use porcelain composite material to repair chipped, cracked, broken or worn teeth. Mercury-safe dentistry has taken safety to another level, with equipment and an overall environment that ensures patients, dentists and all others in the dental office are safe from fumes during the removal of amalgam fillings.

I Need to Find the Right Dentist for Me

There are many general and cosmetic dentists in every city, but people want to find the right dentist for them. In years past, people used the Yellow Pages and word of mouth as the two basic ways of deciding which dentist chair to sit in.

Today, the Internet makes choosing the right dentist a lot easier with websites, reviews and even recommendations showing up on Google and Yahoo’s front page of listings. Dentists who use social media are also helping people discover them by using keywords to get search engine optimization on specific types of dental services. For example, Dr. Vladimir Gashinsky is a holistic dentist in Millburn, New Jersey. He's a mercury-free, mercury-safe dentist and those looking for dentists with a holistic approach can easily find him by searching the Internet.

No matter what, there are a few basic rules to finding the right dentist for you: Here’s a partial list:

1. Ask around. Your friends and family know you best, so start with them.
2. Study your options on the Internet or through telephone interviews.
3. Get a free consultation. Here’s where you’ll get a one-on-one visit so you can see if you are comfortable with that dentist.
4. Look around the dental office and make sure the office is using newer technology.
5. If you need a lot of different types of work done, identify a well-rounded dentist who is able to perform many procedures.
6. Insist on cleanliness throughout the dental office. Also, ask about sanitation procedures.
7. Make sure the office staff and the dental assistants are friendly and professional.
8. Confirm that you are comfortable being there.

The relationship between a dentist and a patient is a long-term one, so finding the right dentist is the first step in having a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Why are Dentists Using Zirconia Dental Implants

There’s a lot of talk these days about zirconia dental implants. People are searching the web asking why people are choosing them over traditional titanium dental implants. These same people also want to know which dentists are offering to place zirconia implants, and why they switched.

What people have learned is that zirconia dental implants are in many cases part of a holistic approach to dentistry. The reason for holistic dentists switching from titanium to zirconia is that the metal in titanium has the potential to be toxic. However, research shows that the human immune system does not react to zirconia, which is a major benefit for those with allergies to metals.

Titanium dental implants have been used by dentists for years because of their compatibility, durability and high strength-to-weight ratio. In recent years, metal-free zirconia has proven to have similar attributes, and many believe zirconia dental implants are safer.

Zirconia (Zr02) is described as the dioxide of zicondium, a metal close to titanium in the periodic table. Zirconia has similar biocompatibility properties as titanium and has tooth-like color. This pleases the aesthetic and cosmetic desires of dental implant patients.

Dr. Vladimir Gashinsky places zirconia dental implants. Currently, the general and cosmetic dentist in Millburn, New Jersey, is using Z-Systems dental implants. Z-Systems implants have been approved by several safety regulatory agencies across the globe, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

How to Find a Great Cosmetic Dentist

Just look at the smiles we see on television and movie screens. From newscasters, actors and sports heroes, teeth are whiter and straighter than ever. And though it seems obvious that these near-perfect smiles are based on the good work of cosmetic dentists, these well-polished looks are becoming more of a standard for the general population.

Cosmetic dentists are in the smile and confidence-building business. They not only make repairs in the mouth for damaged, missing or discolored teeth, they bring the dental professional to new, exciting levels.

Traditional dentistry deals with necessary and routine procedures. Those in the industry establish prevention plans and diagnose oral diseases, always focusing on oral hygiene. Meanwhile, cosmetic dentists go beyond the traditional to include new treatment protocols. These can be restorative in nature, but in general, cosmetic dentistry is more of an elective service. For example, a dentist will use standard elements such as amalgam to fill cavities. However, when patients elect to use a higher-grade material for an enhanced look, such as porcelain or composite materials that can be matched to the color of your own teeth, then patients have moved into the cosmetic dentistry realm.

Cosmetic dentistry includes a wide range of dental procedures. The level of service is contingent on the needs and expectations of the patient, as well as the condition of the teeth and gums. Some people have really straight, healthy teeth and only need a whitening treatment. Others need their teeth straightened and opt for the newer Invisalign braces. From the beginning, the cosmetic dentist provides a plan of action that may include tooth bonding, porcelain veneers and other such dental processes.

No matter how much dental work needs to be done, it’s important to find a cosmetic dentist with experience and a good reputation. Dr. G is a general and cosmetic dentist in Millburn, New Jersey, with a reputation for creating beautiful smiles.

What is Biological Dentistry?

Biological Dentistry emerged as a new field of Probiotic (life-supporting) dental medicine in the late 1970s. It was developed in Germany and is now taught and practiced throughout the world.

Though the term Biological Dentistry sounds scientific, it can be explained in simple enough terms. In general, biological dentistry incorporates a holistic philosophy into a clinical practice, and connects the health of the mouth and gums with the rest of a patient’s body.

Biological dentists are concerned about the overall health of patients, believing that dysfunction in one part of the body will show up as illness somewhere else. They investigate symptoms of patients to identify and work to eradicate their root causes.

The goal of biological dentists is to invoke natural healing using non-invasive treatments and techniques whenever possible. Secondly, these dentists double as educators and teachers, providing patients with information and resources to help them take charge of their personal health.

Biological dentistry can be categorized as conscious dentistry. Most of these dentists practice the holistic lifestyle and are therefore aware of the mind, body, spirit connection. Many are also connected to other holistic practitioners, so they are able to share about or incorporate time-proven healing into their methods such as homeopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, physical therapy and herbology.

Dr. Vladimir Gashinsky is a biological dentist who offers a holistic approach to dentistry and lives the holistic lifestyle. He is an expert at placing zirconia dental implants and is considered a mercury-free and mercury-safe dentist in Millburn, New Jersey.
